Chanel's Coco Mademoiselle
“Coco Mademoiselle: a surprisingly fresh, feminine fragrance with a distinct character. A dual name, evoking a dual personality. A woman who is both mischievous and provocative, independent and endearing, who reinvents herself freely.”
The story of Coco Mademoiselle—one of duality, complexity, and reinvention—aligns with my own. I am, with daily determination, in pursuit of the conjunction: ‘and’. I am an author, and I am a mother. I desire community, and I desire solitude. I am angry, and I am at peace. I grieve, and I love. I am burdened, and I am empowered.
I am gentle-hearted, and I am wild.
I am composed, and I am enlivened.
And. And. And.
If Coco Mademoiselle were a poem, it would be Kate Baer’s Moonsong.
You are not an evergreen, unchanged
by the pitiless snow. You are not a photo,
a brand, a character written for sex or
house or show. You do not have to choose
one or the other: a dream or a dreamer, the
bird or the birder. You may be a woman of
commotion and quiet. Magic and brain.
You can be a mother and a poet. A wife and
a lover. You can dance on the graves you dug
on Tuesday, pulling out the bones of yourself
you began to miss. You can be the sun and the
moon. The dance a victory song.
It is a pinch-me moment to collaborate with Chanel to create imagery that represents and honors this story. Below, my inner duality, complexity, and reinvention is captured by Zachary Gray, a dear friend and renowned photographer. My hair and makeup was done by Allie Katz, a new friend and Nashvillian.
