Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West
Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West in Scottsdale, Arizona is a must-see if you have an appreciation for ever-thoughtful design, primary color schemes, and mountainous settings. It is nestled in the foothills of the McDowell Mountain Range, inclusive of material from the desert upon which it was built, and as always, serves as an architectural extension of its natural surroundings. It was formerly Frank Lloyd Wright’s winter home and studio, a place where his students would come to learn directly from him and assist him in maintaining the property’s grounds. The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation is headquartered at Taliesin West.
Below, I’ve written a few simple tips to keep in mind when planning a visit for yourself.
Plan to spend at least two hours at Taliesin West. Purchase a ticket in advance as close to opening as possible. You must call to reserve your ticket: 888.516.0811. Wear comfortable shoes, and bring sunglasses and sunscreen. I did an audio tour, as opposed to a guided tour, so I could tour (read: photograph) at my own pace. It seemed most visitors also did an audio tour. If you are staying in Phoenix, you can Uber to and from Taliesin West in Scottsdale. I personally did this and had no issues.
